Transitional Diaconate Reflection by Chi-Nhan Vo

May 21, 2024

Q: Describe a blessing you experienced during your formation.

A: It’s hard for me to pick a single blessing that I received in formation! Because I entered the seminary right after high school, and because I hardly knew my Catholic faith before then, it was very much in and through seminary formation that I came to know Jesus Christ at all. So it was in this whole nine-year process- in class, in seminars, in table, conversation, on my knees in the chapel- in that the Lord Jesus taught me who he is and how good he is, what he has done and continues to do for me and the world. It’s all I can do now to introduce his people to him, too.

Q: What are you most joyfully anticipating in your ministry?

A: In my diaconate ministry (and hopefully into my priestly ministry too), I’m very excited to preach at holy mass. The homily is not just any speech that happens to take place at church, but rather it is a unique moment where the homilist unlocks the mysteries just proclaimed in Scripture, shows how those mysteries are operative in the life of the Christian, and leads into the Liturgy of the Eucharist as the sacramental encounter with those mysteries. So, it’s a great responsibility! But we all know the power of a homily that is faithful to this task and does it well. I’d sure like to try!

You are cordially invited to his ordination this Saturday, May 25th, at St. Mary’s Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, at 11 AM. Watch the livestream here: 2024 Diaconate Ordination (
