On August 22, 2025, the seminarians, faculty, alumni, and friends of St. Patrick’s Seminary gathered in solemn joy for the Mass of Consecration of the
Seminary to the Blessed Virgin Mary, celebrated by Archbishop Salvatore J. Cordileone of the Archdiocese of San Francisco. Rich in prayer, beauty, and devotion, the liturgy marked both a historic milestone for the Seminary and a renewed commitment to entrust priestly formation to the maternal intercession of Mary, Mother of the Church and Mother of Priests.
Presiding with deep reverence, Archbishop Cordileone was joined at the altar by concelebrating priests, among them Deacon Zachary Muñoz, recently ordained transitional deacon for the Archdiocese of Portland. Their presence formed a living testimony to the Seminary’s ongoing mission of preparing shepherds for the people of God.
In his homily, Archbishop Cordileone reflected on the meaning of consecration to Mary in the context of priestly formation. He reminded the seminarians that entrustment to the Blessed Virgin is not a mere ornament of devotion, but an essential safeguard for those preparing for the sacred duties of the priesthood.
After the Mass, the Archbishop led the community in the solemn Act of Consecration. Before the altar, where the Lord was enthroned in the monstrance, seminarians and faculty knelt alongside the Archbishop and united their voices in prayer. The moment was more than a ceremonial gesture; it was a heartfelt offering of the Seminary’s future to Mary’s maternal care and powerful intercession.
The celebration reached its climax in a Eucharistic Procession through the Seminary grounds. Archbishop Cordileone, carrying the Blessed Sacrament high in the monstrance, walked at the head of the procession, preceded by incense, candles, and the joyful voices of the faithful singing hymns of praise.
The procession concluded back in the Seminary chapel, where Archbishop Cordileone offered the final Benediction. Lifting the monstrance in every direction, he blessed the assembly and, symbolically, extended that blessing to the entire Archdiocese and beyond, invoking God’s grace upon all who look to St. Patrick’s Seminary as a house of formation and prayer.
The Consecration Mass was an act of renewal, a declaration of trust, and a sign of hope for the future of the Church. The transcendent beauty of the liturgy, the solemn entrustment to Mary, and the triumphant Eucharistic Procession together created a profound encounter with the mystery of faith.
In consecrating the Seminary to the Blessed Virgin, the community reaffirmed a timeless truth: wherever Mary is present, Christ is more fully revealed. For the seminarians who walked prayerfully behind the Eucharist that day, their vocational journey is now more deeply rooted in the tender embrace of the Mother of God.
